Seeing the Plums at Dazaifu Tenmangu in the Morning: Where to Stay in Dazaifu, Fukuoka

Dazaifu Tenmangu is famous for the legend of the 'Tobiume' (Flying Plum) and its approximately 6,000 ume trees. Basic Information for Dazaifu Tenmangu

  • Dazaifu Tenmangu: The best time to view ume is generally from early February to early March.
  • Opening Hours: 6:00 (from Vernal Equinox Day to the day before Autumnal Equinox Day), 6:30 (other days). Closing hours are 18:30–19:30 (varies by month).
  • Access: 5 minutes on foot from Nishitetsu Dazaifu Station.
  • Specialty: Umebochi (plum leaf rice cakes). These are rice cakes made with a dough of glutinous and non-glutinous rice, filled with red bean paste, and baked. They are sold at over 30 shops along the approach path (listed at 150 yen per piece in Dazaifu City guides).
