Aodani Plum Grove

An ume-growing area in the Aodani district of Joyo City, where white plums, mainly the local "Joshu-haku", bloom over about 20 hectares of orchards. Its origins are unclear, but because it appears in a poem by Prince Muneyoshi, a son of Emperor Go-Daigo, a grove is said to have existed by the end of the Kamakura period.

Joshu-haku is a large, thick-fleshed and fragrant plum; Shirokaga, Aojiku, Oshuku and Gyokuei are also grown, and the fruit is harvested in June and July. During the blossom season the Aodani Plum Festival is held, with shops selling umeboshi and other plum products.
