Features
A flowering ume of the Yabai type with white, medium-sized single flowers.
The Yabai group is thought to be close to the wild ume that came from China, and it is the most common group of flowering ume. The trees look small and delicate, with small flowers and leaves and thin branches, and they are known for their scent.
When it blooms
One of the earliest ume to flower. Kozen Park in Sakai calls it "very early", and Japan's variety examination standard gives it, with Yae-kanko, as an example of "very early" flowering, and also as an example of white flowers.
Where to see it
An Osaka city newsletter (2016) introduced "Toji-bai" as one of the ume that open from about late January at the Osaka Castle Park Plum Grove. It also grows at Kozen Park in Sakai and the Sanuki Flower Garden in Kagawa.
